Training Material

Introduction

This section provides an overview of the training materials, tutorials, and events developed to support the capacity-building objectives of the SAPHEA project. It presents a structured, modular approach to learning how to use the SAPHEA Market Uptake Hub, including its mapping instruments and decision-support tools for planning and financing geothermal heating and cooling (geoHC) systems.

The training programme targets a wide range of stakeholders — from energy utilities and local authorities to researchers, consultants, and community service providers — with the aim of fostering technical competence, strategic insight, and informed decision-making for regional geoHC adoption.

SAPHEA Wiki

The SAPHEA Wiki is the central knowledge base of the project and offers continuously updated, user-friendly documentation. It provides:

  • Detailed explanations of the SAPHEA Tool’s functionalities (including calculation modules and mapping layers),
  • Step-by-step guidance on using the SAPHEA Market Uptake Hub and associated tools (i.e. Gamebook).

SAPHEA User Manual

The SAPHEA User Manual offers step-by-step instructions for learning how to use the SAPHEA Tool, interacting with the Market Uptake Hub, using the mapping tools (Deliverables D4.1 and D4.2), and applying decision-support resources for geoHC project development.

Training Events

SAPHEA training events were tailored to different audiences and engagement levels:

  • Short Workshops (60–90 minutes): Focused sessions demonstrating the use of financial mapping tools and funding identification strategies.
  • Conference Presentations: High-level overviews aimed at policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers.
  • Train-the-Trainer Workshops: Deep-dive sessions targeting regional multipliers and capacity-building agents, ensuring sustained dissemination and adoption of the SAPHEA tools.

Each training event combined:

  • Presentations of the project and tool,
  • Live walkthroughs of selected features,
  • Hands-on use-case exercises,
  • Q&A and participant feedback collection.

How to Host a SAPHEA Training – Train-the-Trainer Approach

This section provides practical guidance for organising your own SAPHEA training sessions, using and adapting the official materials. Whether you're planning a workshop for municipal staff, researchers, utilities, or regional stakeholders, this guide supports you in becoming a local trainer and multiplier for geothermal heating and cooling (geoHC) solutions.

All SAPHEA materials—including the Wiki, User Manual, Tutorials, and Presentations—are openly accessible and can be tailored to local needs and contexts.

Purpose

The train-the-trainer approach is designed to:

  • Enable trained users to deliver further sessions in their organisations or regions.
  • Strengthen local capacity for geoHC planning and financing.
  • Support decentralised adoption and practical use of the SAPHEA Toolbox.

How to Reuse the Materials

1. Identify your audience

Tailor content to local authorities, utilities, researchers, or consultants.

2. Select and adapt materials

Use the official slides, User Manual, and tool tutorials. Add local datasets or policy references if needed.

3. Choose your format

  • Short Intro (10–20 min): Overview for stakeholders
  • Standard Session (60–90 min): Tool demo + Q&A
  • Workshop (90–120 min): Includes hands-on exercises

4. Include interaction

Demonstrate real tool use (e.g. running a Calculation Module), and let participants try exercises using regional examples.

5. Share training resources

Provide access to the User Manual, Wiki, slide decks, and sample scenarios.

6. Collect feedback

Use the training feedback forms to gather insights and improve future sessions.

Feedback

User feedback plays a key role in refining the SAPHEA training materials and sessions. Feedback is gathered at the end of each training activity to help assess usefulness, clarity, and overall engagement. At the conclusion of the training programme, a summary of key insights and lessons learned will be published here to inform future improvements.
